World's Largest Skateboard Hits Vegas

During the 3rd event of Street League Skateboarding Pro Tour in Vegas, California Skateparks brought out the World's Largest Skateboard. This certified record breaking skateboard never fails to turn heads and drop jaws. Here are some photos from the Vegas strip.

A Vegas Ending

The 3rd and final stop of the first annual Street League Skateboarding Pro Tour wrapped up in Las Vages on September 25th. California Skateparks and California RampWorks built yet another flawless, indoor concrete plaza. The contest kept skaters and spectators on edge, as the win boiled down to the last trick between Chris Cole and Shane O'neill. When Chris Cole fell on his last attempt, Shane O'neill was able to eek ahead and take home the 150 gs, not to mention 10 extra grand for 2 best tricks in the contest. Not bad for a 20 year-old's earnings. The real-time scoring at Street League events allows for fans to follow every trick, and keep track as skaters move up and down the ranks. Street League Vegas was a great event and a great way to wrap up its season. See you next year!

Street League Ontario, CA: 2nd Stop

Saturday, September 11th was the 2nd stop of Street League Skateboarding Pro Tour. The second Street League was hosted at Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California. California RampWorks is helping California Skateparks with the build for all three stops. The indoor plaza designs for Street League events are comprised of skatelite and concrete, bringing the authentic street feel right inside the arena! The sections of the second stop, designed by California Skateparks' Joe Ciaglia, Colby Carter, and SLS's Rob Dyrdek were inspired from features you might find in an indoor mall, and implemented a blocky theme.

If you haven’t heard the buzz from MTV star and professional skateboarder, Rob Dyrdek himself, the first-ever Street League Skateboarding event is coming to Jobing.Com Arena on August 28th! The creator of MTV’s hit show “Fantasy Factory” is bringing one of the greatest action sports and entertainment events to Phoenix! CA Skateparks has been working steadily with Dyrdek to get the right design. Some of the features have been pro tested and approved in an airplane hanger in California. CA RampWorks is helping build the courses for all three Street League stops.

This professional contest series stacks up the best street skaters of our time and takes a real-time scoring system to keep the fans on the edges of their seats! The largest prize purse in skateboarding’s history of $1M dollars is up for grabs. A few recognizable names that have been confirmed for the first Street League Skateboarding , Glendale, AZ, stop are: Chris Cole, Ryan Sheckler, Torey Pudwill, Paul Rodriguez, and Sean Malto. But as the saying is often heard, “The better the course, the better the skating."

CA Skateparks (Upland, CA) will also be show-casing the World’s Largest Skateboard at Street League Skateboarding. The skateboard stands 3 feet 7 1/2 inches tall, 8 feet 8 inches wide and 36 feet 7 inches long and has been certified by the Guinness Book Of World Records as the World's Largest Skateboard.

CA RampWorks builds 2010 SuperGirl Jam

August 22nd is the annual ASA SuperGirl Jam in Venice Beach . The top female athletes compete on the Snowboard Rail Jam and Street Course. CA RampWorks has created a fresh design to compliment both skateboarders and inliners who will be using the Street course. As for the snowboarders, snow is blown in for the Rail Jam. This event gives female athletes a chance to unite and limelight the progressions of women's action sports. So, for all you guys who like to see girls who can ride. The Maloof Money Cup rolls up on us again in Orange County August 4^th- 8^th. The park designs and pro riders always bring much anticipation with them, as Maloof Money Cup was one of the first contests on the scene to claim an appeal to the “core” street skaters in the industry. One reason being that the pro riders are involved in the design process. Which in case, gives rise to the almighty street course design.

Joe Ciaglia, owner of California Skateparks, Skateparks designer Colby Carter, and professional skateboarder, Geoff Rowley work hard to design a street course that top skaters can appreciate and enjoy laying down their best tricks on. This year, CA Skateparks left the skyscrapers in NY for the sunny beaches of Southern California. Everyone should feel right at home as the course replicates real skatespots around the southern coastline of California.

Maloof Money Cup is all around, a fun event. The Maloof brothers, also owners of the Sacramento Kings and Palms Resort hotel in Las Vegas, NV, know how to entertain. Set in the heart of the Orange County Fairgrounds, spectators can visit vendor booths, play games, and get good food without ever leaving the venue. It’s not rare to see other celebrity athletes amongst the fans as well. Not to mention, the Maloof’s never let down with the guest entertainer, last year Snoop Dog showed up!

Since the first MMC in 2008, the Carl’s Jr Vert Ramp has been designed and built by California RampWorks. This was the same event last year that Alex Perelson landed the 4^th ever 900 in a contest run. The Vert design also has pro rider influence from names such as, Bob Burnquist, Rune Glifberg, and PLG. Another spectator favorite is the mini-MegaRamp. CRW is the official builder of the mini-MegaRamp and the much larger MegaRamp.

For both spectators and riders, a great course makes for a grand event, but so does the $450,000 up for grabs! Will Chris Cole bring home his 3rd win of $100,000?!

Woodward Beijing Grand Opening

The grand opening of the new Wooward in Beijing, China was last weekend. Among many festivities was the opening of the new Street Plaza, which was designed and built by CA Skateparks. Today is delivery day for CA Ramp Works and CA Skateparks, builders of the 2010 Transworld Skate and Create. This year, it is a battle of the footwears, as the 4 companies: Adidas, Fallen, Etnies, and Lakai, compete in a skate and film-off. The teams have seven exclusive days to skate and create (paint, build, sculpt, etc.) on the custom pieces given to them. In the end, the teams vie to produce the best video, which will be judged by Transworld and Skin Phillips himself. This morning CRW delivers 36 unique components, including: curved boxes, adjustable stair-sets, and handi-gaps... to name a few, while CA Skateparks unloads granite ledges and concrete features. Adidas is first up, kicking off the competition.

BMX Triples 2010 Covergae and Results

On March 20, 2010, 12 of the best BMX riders went head to head, in an elimination style of competition at the 2010 BMX Triples. This year left Ryan Nyquist and Scotty Cranmer to battle out for the crown. But in the end, it was Scotty Cranmer who rode away with the win. CA Ramp Works got nothing but positive feedback from their build of the BMX Triples Jumps.

Testing of the 2010 BMX Triples Jumps

The final pieces are welded and bolted into place for this year's ASA BMX Triples Jumps. The engineering and build behind ramps such as the BMX Triple Jumps, and the Mega Ramp, which stands a towering 80ft, is one of precision, expertise, labor, and skill. Every piece of metal is carefully measured, welded, bended, and bolted. Of course, the real testimony comes from the riders themselves. The test jumps this year came from a few willing souls at Kids That Rip Skateboard School. At only 11 and 9 years old, Jett Eaton and Jagger Eaton, have already jumped the mini-mega ramp. Yet, when you don't have a ramp of that size to practice on everyday, standing a top a 20ft roll-in can be very intimidating. After his first run, Jett's face lit up and said, "This is soo fun!". They both handled the jumps like pros, and it was an awesome "show"!

Ramp Works has been working hard for the past couple of weeks: welding, bending, framing, and cutting. Despite the unusual rainy weather for Mesa, AZ and JT's visit to Urgent Care from just a small slice to the hand, the BMX Triple's jumps are almost done.

Ryan Sheckler, Training Facility in San Clemente

Ryan Sheckler,
20-year-old pro skateboarder and star of the MTV series "Life of Ryan," now has his own city-approved private training facility in San Clemente.

It's in a 4,900-square-foot warehouse in the Rancho San Clemente Business Park that Sheckler converted to a private indoor skate park with ramps, stairs, railings and other features.

City planning commissioners approved a permit Wednesday night, setting hours, rules and occupancy limits. For example, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, the facility is to be limited to one individual and no spectators. From 5 p.m. to midnight, there can be up to five people.

"At no time will the training area be open to the general public," said John Ciampa, assistant city planner. "The training area was used by the previous business for warehouse purposes and has been converted to an indoor skateboard park for Mr. Sheckler to practice without distraction."

Bikers Using Moorpark Skatepark Despite Prohibition

RampWorks is trying to help design and build a bikepark for these guys:

A $2.24 million, 17,000-square-foot skate park that opened in December in Moorpark continues to be popular, with as many as 75 to 100 skateboarders using the facility at Poindexter Park on some days, according to city estimates.

But city officials said the park is also attracting many bikers, despite rules posted outside the gates that prohibit bikes.

Moorpark Parks and Recreation Commissioner Sandra Thompson said some users of the park are also bringing scooters, a prohibited use as well.

“The conflict of use (at the park) isn’t working,” Thompson said during a park commission meeting on Monday. “I do not believe that at any time that there should be bikes and skateboards at the same time because that has proven to not be a good mix.”

Thompson said she has been asked by skate park users if there can be specific times when those with bikes can exclusively use the park.

Last year, the Moorpark City Council unanimously voted to ban bikes there until the skate park establishes a track record with skaters. Council members agreed to reconsider allowing bikes there in the future.

Tom Kruse, director of parks and recreation, said city staff has researched skate parks in other cities and some do allow the mixed bike and skateboard use, either at the same time or during different hours.

However, Kruse said the park’s “swimming pool” feature would need to be retrofitted to handle bike use because of the significant damage caused by pedals and other bike components.

“That in itself is reason enough not to have bicycles in that park. However, we are looking at other sites for a BMX park within the city,” Kruse said.

Ryan Gutierrez, a 16-year-old biker from Moorpark, said he likes the idea of having a separate bike park.

“I have to admit that the skate park is really cool, but (bikers) would love to have a place to call our own,” Gutierrez said.

The park commission also on Monday received a status report on some other problems experienced at the skate park, including users ignoring the rules requiring helmets and pads. In response, Moorpark police have begun an education program — rewarding kids observing the rules with gift cards from local merchants.

Kruse said another problem the city has encountered is complaints when the skate park is closed during normal operating hours because of rain or wet conditions.

Kruse said that rule is for the safety of users.

During the heavy rains several weeks ago, about 5 feet of water accumulated in the skate bowls because the sump pump was overwhelmed, he said. City staff ended up using portable pumps and hoses to empty out the water.

“We try to be as safe as possible during times of heavy rains,” Kruse said.

Honors Student Takes on Skateboarding’s Biggest Challenge

For the past four years, skateboarding has been a passion for Emily Stefano,
a mechanical engineering junior at Clarkson. Now, it’s also the basis for her Honors thesis.

With her project, “The Physics and Engineering of Skateboarding’s MegaRamp,” Emily Stefano hopes to advance skateboarding by redesigning one of its biggest and most challenging competitive structures: the MegaRamp.

The MegaRamp is the world’s largest skateboarding structure, used by skateboarders and BMX bikers in competitions such as the X Games. It consists of a 50- or 70-foot long “roll-in” leading to a 50- or 70-foot gap, followed by a 30-foot-tall quarter-pipe. Athletes ride down the steep roll-in platform to gain speed in order to perform tricks over the gap and on the quarter-pipe to complete a “run.”

“My dad sent me a video of the MegaRamp one day when I was at school and asked if anyone had ever looked into the physics of it,” explains Emily. “Unlike most other structures of this scale the MegaRamp didn’t start out grounded in scientific knowledge or from a set of fully engineered plans. Instead it was designed by professional skateboarder Danny Way based on his experience and knowledge”.

In its current design, performing on the MegaRamp can be risky due to the speeds the athletes must reach and forces they must endure in order to perform well. In the last few years, concerns have been raised about the ramp’s safety based on the number of injuries associated with it.

Emily decided to study the physics of the ramp and to develop calculations that would result in a better engineered — and safer — design. She contacted the builder of the ramp, John Tyson ofCalifornia Ramp Works , who immediately saw the potential benefit in her research. Tyson then helped Emily get in touch with MegaRamp so she could make her proposal. After working out the legalities of the situation, the MegaRamp team gave Emily the raw data she needed, including the dimensions of the ramp, which called for the signing of a nondisclosure agreement.

Emily needed a way to see and record real skateboarders’ movements on the MegaRamp to accurately make her measurements in the laboratory. She was invited by MegaRamp to videotape pro skateboarders while they practiced for the X Games in California. Over a two-week period, Emily was able to get all the footage she needed.

Now back on campus, Emily is putting it all together. “I’m trying to put an equation to the ramp to figure out how it could be built differently to make it easier for the athletes to use,” says Emily. First, she will build a scale model of the MegaRamp and experiment with weights in different locations to learn the effects of center of gravity on the ability of a skateboarder to land tricks on the ramp. This will help to isolate the effects of friction and air resistance in the equations.

Next, Emily will use the video footage to find the effects of other body movements of the skateboarders that cannot be mimicked with a scale model, leading to an equation that accurately models the path of a skateboarder on a ramp. Using the equation will help Emily learn the effects of changing certain dimensions of the ramp and allow her to find the best ones.

Finding these dimensions will also allow Emily to scale the ramp, which may just give pro skateboarders like MegaRamp inventor Danny Way what they really want: bigger ramps and a bigger challenge.

But for now, it’s one step at a time for Emily, who is eager to resume her research in the lab. “I’m excited to see what I can accomplish now that I have all the pieces to the puzzle,” says Emily. “I'd love to continue with similar work in the future so my job can be just as much fun!”

California Skateparks builds Maloof in 2010

Maloofs expand competition

IRVINE, Calif. -- The Maloof Money Cup skateboarding competition is expanding to New York City this year.
Joe and Gavin Maloof, who own the NBA's Sacramento Kings, said Tuesday they will hold Maloof Money Cup New York on June 5-6 at Flushing Meadows Park in Queens, featuring a street skateboarding competition. The winner will earn $100,000.
The Maloofs have agreed to donate the $1.8 million, world-class skate park they will build for the competition to the city of New York through the City Parks and Recreation Department's "Adopt-A-Park" program. Joe Maloof said the cost of the skate park will be defrayed by contributions from sponsors Vans and Monster Energy.
The Maloof Money Cup will return to Southern California for the third straight year, featuring street and vert competition, from Aug. 4-8 at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
"I always felt the most important thing was to start in California, where it was born," Joe Maloof said. "We'll always stay in Orange County and the L.A. area. That will always be No. 1. However, we needed to get an East Coast presence. It's a privilege to get into New York. It's not easy to have an event in New York."
The New York competition will include a wild-card contest to give local skaters the opportunity to compete against the top pros in the industry. Pro skaters Chris Cole and Geoff Rowley, New York skating icon Steve Rodriguez and Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks will lead the design of the street course. The New York prize purse is nearly $250,000.
The Maloof Money Cup Orange County will expand to five days.
Invited pros include defending champions Cole in the street competition and Alex Perelson in vert. The 18-year-old Perelson won last year's vert after becoming just the fourth person to land a 900 during a competition.
The Maloof Money Cup Orange County pays out nearly $500,000 in cash and prizes, with $100,000 going to the street winner and $75,000 to the vert winner.
Maloof said the competition will expand to South Africa in 2011.
"I think this thing has evolved from a small skateboarding camp to a major skateboarding event," Maloof said. "It's going to expand opportunities for skateboarding around the world."

Concrete Ledges for the DC Warehouse

California RampWorks is currently fabricating some custom street obstacles for the DC warehouse out of the Arizona Shop. Here are a few photos of the progress so far.

These are some killer steel balls the guys over at DC picked out for their grind boxes.

These balls are going to be used as the legs.

After the trays are fabricated into the correct shapes, the balls are then welded to the bottom of the tray.

Once all the legs are attached and everything is braced of properly, the pieces will be ready to fill with concrete.

These pieces are super durable and designed to remain portable which work great for indoor applications.

California RampWorks at the Fantasy Factory

California RampWorks has been hard at work with California Skateparks designing and building season 3 of Rob Dyrdek's MTV show, the Fantasy Factory.

I can't give away all the secrets, but here is a sneak peek form the construction site. We added more ramps around the whole facility, giving the already spectacular indoor skaters fantasy a facelift and overhaul.

We added all new rails and lines thruought like this killer kinked rail that is ready to be hit from all directions. Rob's Worlds largest skateboard (built by Joe Ciaglia at California Skateparks) will be seen in this season, mounted inside the park, sporting the custom AWS and CSP graphics on the bottom.

The banks were also mellowed out and hips cleaned up to create better flow and should most definitely improve the lines.

The ramps are now completely surrounding the office space, creating unique flow lines inside and out. Shown here is the substructure of a concrete bowl corner that will lead into a miniramp on one side and a eurogap on the other. RampWorks and California Skateparks have continued to use the hybrid construction techniques that allow for a truly freeing design experience. Creativity is now unleashed which makes all of us designers breathe a little easier when handing the designs and specs to the foreman.

The DC Ramp is Finally Finished!

California RampWorks has created yet another masterpiece. The brand new DC Vert Ramp is now complete, including an enormous street hip, removable square coping lappers, a Texas-sized euro-gap, rolling tranny sections, setback walls, and much more. Here are a few pictures of the freshly finished product. I will post some quality skate photos as they surface.

This is a prime example of what a vert ramp step-up would look like.

They were putting the finishing touches and skatelite on the Chin-section.

Erik taking the time to show Jake exactly how easy it is to transform the channel.

A few bolts, levers, and braces later, the deck easily swings down with one person.

The entire Tranny piece sits on rollers, and simply rolls back out of the way creating a new channel and deck gap with grind box. Jake Brown's Pimp'n force is so strong he can move the section without even lifting a finger!

The Section of coping can stay in for a channel death rail, or can be easily removed.

After nearing our deadline, we called our buddy Willy Wonka to send over some extra helpers to get the project finished. This was our favorite little guy, Brad.

RampWorks DC Warehouse progress

Almost nearing completion, the California RampWorks crew gets closer to covering the massive indoor vert ramp for DC Shoes and Monster Energy. Designed by Colin Mckay, Jake Brown, and PLG, this ramp has some seriously gnarly custom components. I can't to see these guys rip this thing apart!

Check out the truly unique banked hip on the right side. Truly the worlds largest street hip!

The extension of the banked wall to the right will have some Golden State pool coping installed to give it that extra level of gnar,

Here is a shot of the coping. Designed for Skateboarding, this new formula gives the noise and feel of real pool coping.

...and you thought you've skated a euro-gap...

This thing is massive.

Transformers are for girls... this is straight Monster Garage!

Harper has been designing this new fully custom rolling chanel gap. This section has a touch of the Chin Ramp influence, allowing for either a 8' chanel gap, a floating rail, or in closed position reates a long continuous flat wall. More proof that California RampWorks can make your wildest visions come to fruition.

Just a few more days and we should have this thing all sewn up.

New Pictures of the Berrics!

Here is a good shot of the 5-stair rail and Hubbas. Everything you see here is a combination of concrete, steel, and wood. The last 10ft before the top of the stairs is all poured concrete to give that perfect snap.

Here you can see the 7-stair set and rails. Butter.

The Park wasn't two weeks old and you can see the solid application of wax and wheels marks along the low ledges. If you haven't seen footage of the new park yet, go to www.theberrics.com now!

This feature I have coined a "Handi-Gap" for obvious reason. Not shown in this picture are two removable handrails that can be used as a pop-over rail or interconnected into one long flat-bar. I saw some good footage of Peter Ramondetta killing it.

Every indoor skatepark needs to upgrade to concrete.

The DC Training Facility

DC Shoe Co has decided it was time to re-design their ideal vert and street training facilities in the warehouse in Encinitas, California. Naturally, they came to the most qualified group of custom builders, California RampWorks.
Although it was no easy task blending the worlds largest indoor street hip, the work is nearly completed thanks to Tony and the crew on the grounds. Soon, some of the most insane footage will be birthed in this very location!

The Street section is still in the design phase, nearly finalized.

Simple. Clean. Solid.

The Berrics

The CRW crew has been on site at the Berrics in Los Angeles, CA remodeling the most infamous skatepark in the world. Owned and managed by Steve Berra and Eric Koston, this facility is designed around filming, the heart and soul of the Berrics.

The concept started with some sketches from Berra:

Then progressed to some detailed drawings and concepts:

Once the design was dialed in, the California RampWorks crew headed over to Los Angeles to get the project started.

With any remodeling project, it always begins with demolition and sorting the keepers from the trash.

Everything that could have been recycled or re-used was carefully pulled apart and reassembled and used in another part of the park.

There was tons of custom steel fabrication on this project because we are using our hybrid construction techniques that allow us to build concrete structures indoors without damaging the existing building by incorporating wood, steel, concrete, and Styrofoam into the design. Ruben shown here, welding up the 7-stair set.

The crew is on site and working diligently to get the wheels rolling by the end of the month. We will post more pictures as work progress'.

Once again, the rain rolls through this East-coast Amazon country as the riders try to get a few runs in before the storm. The Oi MegaRampa skateboard contest is slated for this weekend in Sao Paulo, Brazil highlighting some of the worlds top skaters including native locals Bob Burnquist and Lincoln Ueda. They say the sun should be coming out for the rest of the weekend, we'll keep our fingers crossed!

Security uniforms somehow resemble something out of Star Wars. This guy is on guard duty protecting the artwork from would-be attackers.

JT saves the day with the addition of the windsocks. Over the past few days the wind has picked up, causing a crazy cross-wind that can really mess with you in mid-air. These allow the skaters to see the wind speed and direction as they drop in.

RampWorks in Brazil!

The California RampWorks crew including John "JT" Tyson, Brian Harper, Tony Checcia, and myself, Dug Ketterman, have been enjoying the Brazilian lifestyle for the past week thanks to the amazing hospiltality of the Oi MegaRampa crew. We are here in not so sunny Sao Paulo, Brazil, overseeing the construction of the MegaRamp for next weekends festivities.

George Rotatori (Left), owner of Rotatori the premiere Brazilian ramp building company is shown here directing his crew on how to install the skatelite on the 27' quarterpipe without gaps in the seams, which if you have ever installed skatelite, you know can be pretty frustrating over large surfaces.

Renan Annize, our ever-so-important translator and quasi-tour guide getting down on some Brazilian nylon.

If you have ever been to Brazil, you would know how impossible it is to navigate the streets without the guidance of a true local of Sao Paulo.

I tried to get some better shots of Tony getting his work-on, but this skull-shot is all I got so far. He is shown installing one of the thousands of screws it takes to fasten the 200-some odd sheets of skatlite to this massive structure.

Notice the two-handed palm press grip...nice form Tony.

Here is one of the Rotatori builders, Guma, looking up the massive roll-in.

At first glance, you may think dead dog, but this is actually Bob, the site stray. He showed up one day with gum in his fur and wandering amelessly. After a bath and tons of TLC from the crew and security, Bob found himself a new temporary home.
He actually made it up the back of the landing ramp, pretty funy watching him slide down taking tiny steps all the way.

The giant tubs are used as counterweights to keep the 80 ft. tower from swaying in the breeze.

This is one of the towers lining the parade grounds, used for cameras and security for the Carnival festivals.

We have plenty more pictures and stories on the way. The pros haven't even started rolling in yet.

ASA SuperGirl Jam

The third annual ASA Supergirl Jam, built by California RampWorks, featured some of the worlds most talented female skateboarders, snowboarders, and skaters. This Labor day event brought even more character to an already colorful Venice Beach, California.

With the beach in the backdrop, the snow was falling, the bums were hustling, and the girls were shredding at this years all-girl Supergirl finals.

The snow was a welcomed sight to the Dogtown Locals, providing post-event activities like bum-crafted snow sculptures and of course the occasional territorial snowball fight.
The tower seen above was assembled in under a day and disassembled in a few hours.
